Meet Umi, and the idea behind ThinkUmi

A small owl with big glasses, a club of six friends, and a simple belief: little minds are ready for big adventures.

The story of Umi

How a small owl decided to help every child become the best version of themselves.

The owl who looked twice

High in an old oak tree with two round windows lives a small owl called Umi. Most owls look at the world once. Umi looks twice. A park is never just a park: there is a kite with a new bow, a fence with one post missing, a cat who has swapped her cap for a woolly hat. “Everything has a story,” Umi says, “if you look closely enough.”

A club is born

Umi’s friends — Benny the bear, Coco the cat, Pip the bunny, Max the pup and Fern the fox — loved a different game: changing things when nobody was watching. One day Umi caught every single change. The friends laughed, Umi laughed, and the Sharp Eyes Club was born: a club where looking carefully is the whole adventure.

What Umi believes

Umi noticed something while running the club. Children who look closely start to think clearly. Children who think clearly start to solve things on their own. And children who solve things on their own stand a little taller. So Umi made a promise: to help every child become a better version of themselves — not by handing over answers, but through attention, learning and creative thinking, one small discovery at a time.

Careful beats fast

In Umi’s world there are no timers and no races. A case can take a minute or an afternoon. When a puzzle gets tricky, Umi slips a hint onto the page, upside down, so a detective can choose when to peek. When the last puzzle is solved, Umi signs the certificate. The point was never speed. The point is the moment a child says, “I found it myself.”

The adventures ahead

Umi’s club is growing. After spot-the-difference comes search-and-find, then mysteries to solve, mazes to escape, patterns to crack and memories to test — in books today and, before long, on a screen. Different puzzles, same promise: look, think, find, and grow.

“Every child is already clever. My job is to help them notice.” — Umi

Umi in every book

Umi is a young owl who cannot pass a picture without stopping to look. Where other birds see a park, Umi sees a kite with a new bow, a fence with one post missing and a cat who has swapped her cap for a woolly hat.

That habit became a club. Umi gathered five friends — Benny, Coco, Pip, Max and Fern — who love to change things when nobody is watching, and the Sharp Eyes Club was born. Umi leads every case, cheers on new detectives, slips a hint onto the page when things get tricky and signs the certificate at the end.

In every ThinkUmi book, Umi is the guide: the voice that says look, think, find and reminds everyone that careful beats fast.

Umi’s detective tricks
  • Sweep like you read: left to right, top to bottom.
  • Check one thing at a time: hats, faces, clothes, the sky.
  • Count! Spots, stripes, buttons and petals love to change.
  • Look for things that moved, turned or switched places.
  • Stuck? Take a break and come back. Fresh eyes find more.
  • Careful beats fast. There is no rush, so take your time.

How we make a ThinkUmi book

Start with a picture worth studying

Scenes are drawn to be explored: friendly characters, clear shapes and details that reward a second look.

Grow the challenge gently

Books climb through levels, from one big, clear change to several subtle but fair ones, so children feel the progress.

Check every answer

Every puzzle is built from one master picture and changed on purpose, then checked against its answer key.

Keep grown-ups in the loop

Tips, hints and a full answer key mean a parent can join in without being the expert in the room.

Our books are play-based activity books. They are not a diagnostic tool, treatment or therapy, and we do not make claims about test scores or developmental outcomes.
